4LIFE: HOW A HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TEAM,
EL GORDO AND THE LAST UNCONTACTED TRIBE
REDEFINED CITY PRIDE
by Kendall F. Person
25-20 not the urgency of 51/50 nor the universal jubilation of 420, but for a neighborhood in north Sacramento, long reviled, often scoffed and sometimes neglected, those numbers created a moment in California history, that can never be repeated. By the score of 25 – 20, Grant High the community jewel of Del Paso Heights and an underdog on all scorecards, defeated Long Beach Poly – ranked No. 2 in the nation – taking sole possession of the 1st ever California Interscholastic Federation Football Championship… also known as the State Crown.
$434,800 for every ticket marked 79140. 1,600 matches in all, with 800 winners in one tiny village, the size of a neighborhood, “Nearly everyone had a ticket or a share in one.” – the Mayor
400 ft at its highest elevation. No buildings nor roads, no infrastructure whatsoever. No emergency responders, no sounds no alarms. In fact, on North Sentinel Island, in 60,000 years, not a single thing has changed at all. 3 days after an earth-rotation-altering earthquake and tsunami, that took the lives of one quarter of a million people on 2 continents in 13 countries from 59 nations, somehow, the world’s most isolated neighborhood… yielded survivors.

Round 10
After the beating he endured in the first 9 rounds, it was a wonder he made it to ten. Only his brute strength and iron will, allowed him to re-enter the ring, But in the end, it did not matter, he was not the same fighter he once was. And in cities around the nation, we were frozen, unable to comprehend, if our lying eyes deceived us, or if Iron Mike Tyson was going down.
As Mike walked forward, Douglas measured or perhaps ridiculed him, by throwing a few meaningless jabs, before going on all in. He landed a devastating uppercut that snapped Tyson’s head upward, then staggered him back. With the instinct of a champion in the making, Douglas saw his chance, and took it, by landing four brutal blows about Tyson’s head and face.*
Mike fumbled for his mouthpiece on the canvas before sticking one end in his mouth with the other end hanging out. The champion attempted to make it back to his feet and finish the fight, but the referee knew he was done. And as millions watched in absolute confusion – the undefeated, undisputed heavyweight champion of the world in the biggest upset in the history of the sport, by a forgotten man named Buster Douglas…. Iron Mike Tyson got knocked out.

The Iditarod is a grueling 1100 mile, competitive dog sled race, beginning in Settler’s Bay near Anchorage, ending 8 to 15 days later in remote Nome Alaska. It is a sport of endurance, nerve and speed, paramount to an off season Olympian’s version in survival of the fittest.
Alaska, also known as The Last Frontier: largest in territory, near bottom in population. 49th state to enter the union, and with only 55 miles of separation – compliments of the Bering Strait – Alaska marks the closest physical proximity, between USA soil and the Russian Federation. Its spectacular beauty is still held in awe, but no longer mysterious to the lower 48, as politics and Wasilla proved, that familiarity breeds contempt. Melting glaciers rise from clear waters; the crystal mountains weep (but we’ll always have Paris). Anchorage is cosmo, Juneau is beautiful, winters are dark and can be cruel with bitter, biting cold.
A vast stretch of untamed wilderness, rooted in rugged unforgiving terrain, guarded around the periphery by majestic mountain ranges, a natural stage, for when temperatures play unplugged: -50 below zero, feels like a torch. Yet inside the harsh bravado, lives the imagination of our childhood. and perhaps on especially lonely nights there is comfort in knowing, the Alaskan Interior is home to the city of North Pole.

Libby Riddles, March 20, 1985 Nome Alaska
In 1985, the Interior plunged to 65 below, clocking winds at 30 miles per hour, with heavy clouds, blocking out the starlight. Officials in Nome, begin spreading the word, regarding the Interior’s dangerous conditions, and urged all teams to find a safe place to spend the night.
For a moment, Libby Riddles born in Wisconsin, lives in Minnesota, pondered her straights, but she was not afraid and therefore not dire. She looked back, in the direction from which she came, no one could be seen in visibility nearing zero, but they were out there, and even her brief indecision, allowed them to make up time. She considered the risk, frostbite could settle in, or worse, if she lost the trail, and temperatures dropped further, there was a chance, she would not survive. But excitement proved contagious, upon noticing her team of sled dogs were up and ready,
Completely alone in the frozen tundra, and when the last vestibules of light gave way, she was covered in absolute darkness. Refusing to fret, she instead fortified her nerves; assembled her team, then a woman named Libby Riddles, zoomed into the Interior, in pursuit of victory, but no regrets in agony’s defeat.
On March 20 1985 – the following day – once she was spotted by an anxious, nervous crowd, sighs of relief followed by loud, thunderous applause. More than 6 hours ahead of her closest competitor, at the exact time Libby Riddles zoomed across the finish line, history cemented her name. Forever connected to the moment, that she became the first woman, to win The Last Great Race.

Most of us swallow down
the silent screams and just carry on.

perfect personal or professional life…
to have a raging meltdown

SCREAM

Over a year ago, I escaped a sexual assault, but not by much. He still managed to take something away from me, that I just can’t seem to get back. I’m depressed all the time; like I’m having a nervous breakdown, and I even have thoughts of ending my life. Counseling hasn’t managed to beat it, leaving me with no idea how to shake my attacker. – He’s still got me
Within a primal scream, you were released from the attack;
and with the burst of an imagined gunshot sound,
you blew away the memory of your attacker.

Counseling is a tool, and while it works alone for some, for many it is more effective when part of an overall plan. Support groups are most helpful. Selecting the appropriate group will surround you with people who have gone through the same or quite similar aggression, and are at varying stages in conquering the all-consuming depression.
Become active as much as you can. Volunteer to feed the hungry, take a class at the local college. Filling your mind with positive, self-supportive devices, concentrating on building memories with the loved ones around you, and if you are a person of faith, reach for it now, it goes a long way. Time will also contribute to diminishing this scarring portion of your life. But always know, your life is precious and valued and has meaning, defined well beyond the cruelty of the attacker. Please, print your question and show it to someone you trust. Someone(s) who will recognize the urgency of your need to talk and your cry for help.
In the words of Skylar Liberty Rose, “Let every difficult moment find a place where it can breathe without restriction.” And do not hesitate nor be ashamed to scream away the pain.
