NO.

Say No to Yes

Focusing is about saying no. – Steve Job

NO.
written & edited by Kendall F. Person

In 1979, a soap opera named General Hospital, along with the cast, would begin an odyssey, never seen before and never since in scripted daytime television. The love affair of Luke & Laura, that turned sci fi, captured a nation’s attention every day at two o’clock.

Dr. Leslie Weber was a main character of sorts, but not really one of the more influential roles (not inclusive of her returns after 1984). But one particular storyline, it too would be forgettable, if not for the fact, that we knew NO was the answer, and when she said “Yes,” she was charged with a murder, committed by Laura, her daughter. yes but no is the answer

The importance of self-introspection cannot be overstated. It is paramount to taking a meditative vacation, deep inside ourselves. There should be no surprises and thus no shame nor fear, nothing to prevent from going all the way in.

Without taking moments of silence reserved for no one or nothing else, how do we connect the dots? How do we learn from our past mistakes and how can we rise above the clouds, if we are not willing to stop, think and learn from the path we have already traveled?

A self-inventory of our past,
benefits our present and our future.

Think of all the disappointments, then extract the ones we have caused others. Think of all the time wasted on concocted excuses and unnecessary apologizing. Remember the arguments and the crying, “You should have said no. But you said yes, and I depended on you.” Saying yes when you can neither afford to or do not have the time, or worse yet, just to rush them off the line, is a temporary shield to hide an undeserved shame or uncomfortableness, that we interpret in their perception of our ‘no’.

say no when its the answerWhen Laura confessed to her mother, that she in fact, had committed the murder that all the townspeople were talking about, Dr. Leslie Weber grabbed her hysterical daughter and said “Tell no one else. I’ll protect you.” When the investigation led to the Weber home, and the detectives inquired as to if Leslie had been at Hamilton’s apartment, she said “Yes”, but the truth was no.  Arrested and put on trial. Her life was devastated and all the while Laura kept quiet, even though she knew it was a lie.  When Dr. Leslie Weber took the witness stand, in her own defense, it was an antonym of the phrase, for when she was asked “Did you kill David Hamilton?” No, is what we thought she would say.

Unintentionally, Laura killed David Hamilton but basically in self-defense. And due to so many backstory factors, she would have never been charged. So not only was it all in vain, but when Dr. Weber answered “Yes, I killed him,”  and the jury found her guilty, and she was sentenced to life in prison, and could no longer practice medicine, or enjoy the embrace of her husband, she had also risked it all on one chance, for she no longer could protect her daughter, her sole reasoning for saying yes.

Not doing what we say we will do,
has actual consequences,
sometimes with devastating effects.

Yes is the response we most wish to give. Rather it makes us feel good to say it or we feel shame in saying no, is a distinction without a difference, because it was never about us in the first place. It was about the person who asked.

Dr. Leslie Weber

Dr. Leslie Weber

So when your best friend calls in a bind and needs to borrow money, yet you have none to loan; or when a coworker asked if you can help her move, but you have other plans, and no intentions of showing up; or when the valet ask if you are okay to drive, and the amount of liquor consumed is way passed yours and the legal limit too, do not think of yourself. Think of your friend who is now in jail, because you said Yes and he asked no one else. And your co-worker is out two hundred extra dollars, that she did not have, because of the late fee from the rental truck because she waited on you.  And think of the little girl, when she awakens from her coma,  and discovers her mother has gone to heaven, hit and killed by a drunk driver.

Yes has no meaning, when not supported by actions or truth. And no is not a bad word, just a statement of fact. And if you still think the two are interchangeable, search the ABC archives for Dr. Leslie Weber.

CONGRESSIONAL 22: How The Political State Affects Our Mental Health

Anxiety and Politics

Dave and Bev Derby

“My brothers each took their lives at 36 after dealing with issues for many years of high anxiety, manic-depressive illness, and drug use. I hope that I have helped somebody see the light in this crazy world we live in.  Since I have had a rather heavy connection to suicide, I promised myself to seek health every day to protect my emotional and mental state. The work that The Neighborhood is doing reaffirms my conviction to staying above the anxiety in any healthy way that I can.  I am blessed with a wonderful life partner in Bev and together we channel our energy for good.” – Dave Derby, Fresno County California – Congressional 22

CONGRESSIONAL 22:
How The Political State Affects Our Mental Health

written & edited by Kendall F. Person

We cannot turn away, no matter how hard we try. One glance at the news, out of the corner of our eyes, that our daily trials and tribulations could be multiplied, if the North Korean state of affairs cannot be calmed. A political state, we do not live in and even though a transition takes place every four or eight years, feelings of uncontrolled helplessness, simply do not translate. But the mind, in all of its complexed wonder, develops its own conclusion and triggers an appropriate onslaught of  emotions. Angry Town Hall Meeting

Angry, concerned and powerful at the voter’s box, are emotions that we have felt. And flashed across our television screens, anger at town hall meetings from coast to coast. But rarely has politics on such a vast, overwhelming scale, begin to diminish our mental health in such a collective adrenaline fueled way.

“An anxiety disorder is a condition
in which you experience frequent,
powerful bouts of anxiety that
interfere with your life.” – ADAA

Congressional 22 marks a political district in California’s sprawling Central Valley, encompassing Fresno and Tulare Counties. Not exactly one of the Golden State’s most famous locations, but with over a million people, it has a larger population than the entire individual states of Delaware, South Dakota, North Dakota, Alaska, Vermont and Wyoming. Yet even its largest city of Fresno, has a small town feel. So when local boy made good in Congressman Devin Nunes, both sides of the political aisle believed, that although division and mistrust, was sweeping the land, they had someone who shared their values and cared about them.

But he turned out to be the worse one.Congressional 22

Maybe, from strictly a political strategy, when the mission – at all cost – is to win or lose, would we want him on our side. Perhaps, during the mediaeval era, when survival and thought were primitive in nature, only then would we have kept him close, to stop the knife from plunging into our backs. Devin Nunes’ moment in the sun was so unnecessarily wrong, so blatantly king lemming, that even the most devout political separatist, have yet to embrace him. From the Oregon state line, to the Mexico border; and from the Sierra Nevadas to the Pacific Ocean, in a deep blue state, with proud pockets of red, all at once Devin Nunes represented the type of political state that affects our mental health.

Getting involved in the larger community,
can help you feel more connected,
making it easier to deal with
the challenges of everyday life.

A man named Dave Derby, understood all too well, how low depression can take us, after burying two brothers, victims of suicide. He and his dear life partner Bev, knew they had to do something, but an angry town hall meeting, did not at all seem therapeutic. After Nunes made it clear, that he had no intentions of attending a public meeting  – in his own district, to speak with his own constituents – Dave and Bev decided to hold a community vigil in front of his office every Tuesday in a city named Clovis.

Kendall F. Person spoke with Dave Derby about how the Every Tuesday Vigil, has evolved into a community meeting and therapy session. It has helped to not only lower the individual and collective anxiety, but it has also uncovered a viable opponent in Fresno County prosecutor Andrew Janz.

Abandoned, angry, feelings of helplessness or anxiety? In Congressional 22, you do not have to feel alone.

What Should I Do?

The mystery of the mind
Colorful like a kaleidoscope
As dark as the deepest ocean
Light clashing with darkness
The mind screaming for help
What should I do?

Sunshine today it seeped through
Normality seems real if only for a moment
Darkness appears floating to the light
The mind screaming for help
What should I do?

Morning, night, darkness, light
Mind racing never standing still
Mood changing once again
The mind screaming for help
What should I do?

ANIMAL KINGDOM
written & edited by Kendall F. Person

All was quiet on that final night. The once busy streets were now completely deserted as everyone took cover in anticipation of what the next day would bring. The stillness of the air gave the furry creatures an eerie feeling as they scampered to take cover and prepare for the unknown. But even the beast had to choose sides. The snakes, jackals and hyenas headed for the darkness as the dogs, horses and gorillas galloped toward the light. World war was upon us and there was no middle ground.

The doors to the barn opened, sending a burst of light outward, lighting up the black sky. All efforts toward peace had failed, even though every person in every country knew that the nuclear option and the firing  of weapons of mass destruction, would achieved their mission. Two countries from the east were the first two step out; strong, proud, unbending, unyielding, unafraid for their minds could not imagine what havoc would be made. Hand on button, a salute to their flag, they were prepared to meet their enemy, although lines were blurred among the peaceful, as to whom the enemy could be.

The west had already united their army, determined to strike first, wanting to believe, if they could annihilate the enemy, then their part of the world would be spared. A few countries found solace somewhere in the middle, clinging to the elusive peace. And even though global war appeared inevitable, they would stand for world peace until the bombs destroyed them or the radiation made them ill.

Simultaneously, like robots, as if all humanity was already lost, leaders from both sides entered their secret chambers, and without further thought for fear of losing nerve, each begin the ritual, to launch the weapons of mass destruction, only fully comprehending, after they slid their hand and pushed the button.

World War III would be remembered by the survivors, as they ran naked through the woods, as the War that forced a power exchange… catapulting animal kingdom, back on top of the food chain.

THE TREE

THE TREE
written & edited by Kendall F. Person

based on the real life events

The real danger in playing a high-stakes game of don’t blink, is when one of the participants values bravado more than the beautiful lives of his very own citizenry.

Kim jong-il, former Leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, by most estimates, was hardly ready to become head of any state. But if the state in question were Nauru, an 8.5 square mile, island nation of 13,000 people, his seemingly out-of-nowhere posturing, would have receive no second look. But he inherited a starving nation, whose motto appears to be ‘worship MY government or die’, and seemed content with maintaining North Korea’s presence on the world stage, by imposing fear and spreading a cult-personality style regime on the rest of humanity.

On August 18, 1976, long after the stalemate of the Korean War, the Napoleon syndrome would be taken to a whole other level. North Korea, also referred to as the hermit kingdom, shields outside knowledge, feeding their people only information that presents the Dear Leader as everything. But to believe all North Koreans are desperate to get out, would be misinformed, for many of them are devout.

North Korean Lt. Pak Chul was prepared to start a world war over the cutting of a poplar tree that was rumored to have been planted by their dear leader. Captain Arthur Bonifas of the U.S. had ordered the tree to be cut down. It sprawled between outposts, and created blind spots in the already dangerous Joint Security Area of the infamous Korean Demilitarized Zone. American troops held axes, prepared to carry out orders.  Lt. Pak approached the captain, ordering him to halt his men from cutting this specific tree. Captain Bonifas stared him down, informing him he would do no such thing. The Tree North Korea

A captain over posts in one of the most dangerous landscapes of the world, his loyalty, bravery and honor remain unquestioned, deservedly so. But his next move, still baffles war strategists. Facing a mortal enemy, tensions burning in the air, he would turn his back on the Lieutenant, a disrespect even in peaceful parts of the world.

The Captain would never see his attacker coming, as the lieutenant showcased his willingness to fight to the death, over the poplar tree, displaying solid loyalty to his leader. The lieutenant, then clubbed the captain to the ground, then screamed these orders to his army of men, “Kill the bastards! Kill them all!” As soldiers, its paramount to their country, to carry out their mission, to obey the law of the land. Captain Arthur Bonifas would stand no chance, the enemy surrounded and hacked him till dead.

A reminder of  just high the stakes have been raised. I hope peace seizes the moment, and I pray the world’s leaders push for diplomacy even as the drums of war ricochet.
