By chance, I came across a news radio program based in Michigan, with a format similar to PBS Newshour, only it was on the radio like NPR. It was during the 2016 US Presidential campaign, so the conversation was civil, yet intense. But it was the voice of a random voter – a working mother, active in her community, who should have set off the alarms in both camps. A Republican herself, who was backing Trump, was relatively calm until questioned by a lockstep Republican, as to how could she support such a candidate. The working mother exploded. “I voted for Democrats! I voted for Republicans! And none of them have ever done anything for me. Maybe I’m wrong, but I have to try something!” then silence overtook the airwaves. No one on the highly decorated panel, knew how to respond when the politically-induced emotional void was laid bare and exposed…. on live radio.

When the robots took over, humanity became giddy and all a flutter. The world wide web was an innovation for the ages. A new way to conduct business, with new tools to aid us in mastering our chosen craft. With the power to stream movies, bid for vehicles and find a bride, few would understand, the power of its dark side.
Before the robots took over, we called one another on the phone and when we were in a car, having dinner or walking in the park, the person we were with, had our full attention from the start. Embedded social graces, enabled a normalcy of pleasant exchanges, held together by an undefined common thread of public decency. But the robots gained power, by controlling us through sound. We may never return an old friend’s call, even though hearing their voices in the voicemail message, made us smile. Yet, when our smartphones ‘ding’ we snap to attention, bringing Pavlov’s Dog, back to relevancy again.
But voids, however, do not last for long; the vacuum affect assures us of that. When cities collapse, it is crime and despair that moves in, rarely replaced by the sweetness of song. But the two political parties seemed content in exchanging power, ignoring the concerns of the Michigan mom and all other demographics. Too zoned-in on an insider’s battle, to note – no music this time, only anger and lies – but their constituents were being led away.

Aside: Too High a Price – originally slated – was a completely different; fact-based reporting. But after deleting the 12th draft, I understood why it was all wrong. I remain firm in my belief, based on facts and what we see, that President Trump is incapable of thinking of anyone’s interest other than his own. But where would I tell converters to go, when all of the nation’s leaders are either participants in or watchers of… The New Pied Piper Show
- President Trump maintains proximity to his base, only because they cheer; and it keeps the cowering GOP in check and the dumb dumb Democrats playing fetch,
- the Progressive Party is it real or just in the heart
- the nation’s brightest minds, are fleeing and being fired from our national workforce.
- there are no Gandhi’s among us, so even the ones with heart, why would we expect the 1% to fight against him when everything he is doing is for them.
- the courts, however, remain staunch in deciding by what is right; and the states appear to have band together, under the double banner of state rights and personal privacy protections
- the resistance is much stronger than imagined.
- The Rachel Maddow Show and The Last Word w/ Lawrence O’Donnell, both from MSNBC, the #1 & #3 cable news shows, have seized the moment with smart, investigative and compassionate political reporting

In 1804, the nation of Haiti on the island of Hispaniola, should have been welcomed by the free world. Embraced for their strength and courage and celebrated for their hard fought victory when they revolted against the French, defeating their imperialist rulers, thereby gaining their independence. The world’s first Black Republic to do so, the new Haiti was born of former slaves (a free people of west Africa before that, however). But the United States was still a bastion of bondage and servitude, where slavery was seen as an institution. Sixty-one years would pass, before its recognition as a national disgrace, crime against humanity and an affront to an Higher Power. A nation of former slaves less than 700 miles off the US shores was unthinkable, so the United States would not recognize Haiti’s right to exist, humiliated after their unsuccessful attempts in aiding the French. The world followed suit and a land of millions of people, vanished in plain site. So Haiti would grow up all alone, closed off from a progressive and changing world, marooned on half an island, victimized by their own success.

In 1986, the Haitian people, poorest in the western hemisphere and near bottom of the economic barrel in comparison to the world, would once again revolt, but this time there would be no celebration avoided, because there was literally nothing left. Jean-Claude Duvalier known as Baby Doc and his wife Michelle, were overthrown by the people and chased out of their native land. Once the world had come to know, why the Dictator Baby Doc had been exiled as President, he and his wife would become pariahs and symbols of the philosophy of greed.
Already of considerable wealth, by any standards across the world, but in a nation still tormented by The 1804 Decision and rocked by natural disasters and national epidemics, the Leaders were living the life of emperors. But Baby Doc’s philosophy on greed – branded and quoted by the empire of Trump – would raise the stakes too high, and the house of cards would fall.

They robbed their own nation he was entrusted to govern, siphoning off funds from government agencies – funded by the people via taxation. The Duvaliers used the money for their own decadent displays, while their country unraveled and its constituents survived at the lowest level. But the people would eventually awaken from their trance and took back their government from a royal narcissistic leader. By the time he was caught, however, Baby Doc had taken money belonging to Haiti and hid it in French banks, adding insult to a long line of injuries inflicted upon a historic republic. Perhaps their trials and tribulations – I like to think – gave them the strength they would need years later, when the earth would shift underneath their feet.

The levying of taxes at times overwhelms, becoming burdensome and an uninspired medium, a lazy solution of solving everything. But it is also how we pay for the demands we make of better schools, tighter security and paved roads. With exceptions made, perhaps to hermits absolute, living on land they own, with water from a natural well they dug, and producing no pollutant footprints or waste indisposed, paying taxes is a Patriotic duty of all Americans and a responsibility when long or short term visitors earn or make money here.

In 2016, Donald Trump responded “That makes me smart,” to the question about not paying taxes, it was not a wisecrack, rather outwitting the government with their own loopholes down to paying zero taxes on an empire worth billions, is demonstrative of greed and foreshadowed the type of President he would be. And each time he thwarts the checks and balances and emerges unscathed, he is actually consolidating power. And if he is able to fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller, than only a lethargic congress stands in the way of a land of no God, no monarchy, no democracy only greed, ruled by the rich elite.
But perhaps, the era of Trump and the systematic collapse of our democracy and goodwill is the big payback, as a way to even the score, since no apology was ever given for 1804.

2013 – A hostile takeover
My first venture into the comment section of a corporate online news site, was actually a very pleasant experience. But a HuffPost, back page review of a relatively known, semi-celebrity, attracted limited attention and none from trolls. But it left me woefully unprepared. for my visit to the comment section of Yahoo on a Trayvon Martin front page article. Five years ago, there were no guidelines to follow, nor moderators to enforce them. It felt like The Lord of the Flies only uglier and real life. Thousands had joined “the conversation” about the loss of a young man’s life, yet it was so remarkably vicious, so void of even minimal respect, that civility walked away, ceding the valuable forums to an underground world that was abusive and hateful. Not until the intent of the relentless attacks by cyber bullies and internet trolls were perceived as ominous, and suicide – for a precious few – became their only way out, did civility take back the night.

I returned to the public forums, only this time my target was cable news and I was ready for the trolls.

Mainstream News
CNN, MSNBC and FNN (Fox News Network) are cut from the same basic cloth. They have news reporting outlets, anchored by highly respected newsman Chris Wallace at FOX – to give one example – but FNN is best known for their political opinion and news talk show formats (like Hannity and The Five, for instance). But a major difference, between the big 3 cable news networks, is that FOX (where FNN derived) is connected to Network Television Station, affiliated with scores of local market FOX tv news channels. To be clear, it defies logic that MSNBC or CNN can be considered mainstream and FNN an outsider.

CNN news anchor Robin Meade actually works for HLN (Headline News) a smaller division of CNN. However, HLN was the centerpiece of CNN, which is the godfather of cable news. There were few if any opinions, in fact some segments had no visible anchors just the audio and graphics, 24 hours a day, in 30 minute segments, at the top and bottom of the hour. Seems primitive now, but without the imagination behind CNN, and less the trailblazing spirit of Ted Turner – the founder – there would be no Fox News Network. Respect
The expansion of cable and the advent of the internet, were the mediums that allowed it to soar, but it was the OJ Simpson trial – crowned The Trial of the Century – that detonated the 24 hour news cycle, giving rise to multiple opinion and news talk shows.

Fake News! and a Troll
Pulp Fiction remains a movie marvel to this day, in part, as an independent film, it spun a paltry $8 million dollar budget into a $220 million fortune. But compare it to mainstream motion pictures, if fails to crack the top 200. Now imagine if the Star Wars franchise, decided to re-brand an establishment as outsiders.
Over-the-top example you say? The Fox News Network is a subsidiary of 20th Century Fox which owns Fox Sports and Fox Television Broadcasting Company. One of the biggest and most influential in the industry. Still not sold? For 16 consecutive years they dominated the cable news audience, often boasting 9 of the top 10 shows. (However, Rachel Maddow has ascended to the top, and now ranks No. 1). In the beginning, the cable news audience belonged to CNN. But when FNN saw an opening, to build upon their market share, they made a sharp and decisive right, capturing the conservative demographics. Had CNN and MSNBC stayed the course, they would have been reduced to cable news rubble, so each made a left turn, giving both parties a safe ground.
The President, Fox News Network, the Conservative movement and their rabid fans (silly, misinformed, but not mean) successfully cast themselves as outsiders, and “CNN and MSNBC are mainstream news and a propaganda arm of the state!”, became their rallying cry. Yes, it worked, but why build a movement on a lie?
Spending time with absolute Trump/Fox News fanatics, who intake information from no other sources, is like living in an alt information society. with such audacity they shout FAKE News! at their rivals.

Aside: After looking up the definition of internet troll, as it turns out, I was trolling them. So if you are asked if Kendall F. Person is a troll, I hope you respond “Yes, but he is the good troll.” (big smile)
